Frequently Asked Questions What type of boat do you have and how long is it? My boat is a 2005 Cobia 222 bay boat powered by a Yamaha 225 four stroke outboard. She is twenty-two feet long, eight feet six inches wide and rides dry and comfortably. I love it and so far all of my customers seem to agree! How many fishermen can you accommodate? I can safely and efficiently accommodate up to four anglers. For larger groups I arrange for additional boats and Captains at two to four anglers per vessel. What area do you fish? Most of the year I charter trips on Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Borgne, Lake Catherine and to the Biloxi Marsh. All of these areas are easily accessed from the marina where I meet my customers and launch. During the spring I also Charter 3 and 4 day trips while staying aboard the Chandeleur Islander moored at Breton Island. What kind of fishing do you do? All of my charters are light tackle inshore fishing. Depending on the wishes or experience of my crew, my trips vary from live bait fishing in deep water to casting lures to redfish in marsh ponds. Fly fishing and combo (fly/spinning) trips are also available. What can I expect to catch? Speckled Trout, Redfish and Flounder are my most common targets and account for the largest quantity of fish taken. However, Black Drum, Sheepshead, Croaker, Channel Mullet, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish and Gafftopsail Catfish are all regular visitors to the areas I fish and often caught as well. How many fish can I keep to bring home? Although we strictly adhere to state laws regarding creel limits, Louisiana offers some of the most liberal size and quantity regulations in the nation. For example… Speckled Trout – 25 per person (12” minimum) Redfish – 5 per person (16” to 27”) Flounder – 10 per person Customers may keep all legal fish up to their creel limit however, I do strongly recommend the live release of all Redfish over 25”. What is the best time of year to schedule a trip? In Louisiana we are blessed with great fishing year round, so your best bet is to plan your trip when the weather is most comfortable for you. My picks for great fishing and great weather are April, May, June, September, October and November. However, I do fish year round and each of the seasons presents a unique opportunity for one species or another. How do I book a trip? Well, you can click here (CaptVan@ShadRig.com) or you can call me at (985) 646-0519. Either way we will check the availability of your requested date and discuss our fishing options. I require a $150.00 deposit for each day reserved and I will hold the days you request for up to one week while waiting for your deposit. You’ll be set up for a great trip in no time. What does a chartered trip include? I supply all quality spinning tackle and all terminal tackle including lures. Bottled water, fuel, oil, ice, and “Blue Lizard” sun screen are also included in the price of the charter. What do I need to bring? You should bring a lunch, snacks and your preferred beverages, I'll provide cooler space for these items. You’ll may also want to bring a camera and depending on weather a jacket or coat and rainwear. If you prefer baitcasting or fly fishing equipment and wish to use either you should bring that as well. Just remember, no glass bottles or containers, no black soled shoes and no hard liquor. Can I bring my own Tackle? Yes, if you have a favorite rod you are welcome to bring it. I supply quality spinning rods and reels (usually two per person) for all trips, so if you plan to bring your own equipment please let me know ahead of time (I’ll need to leave some of mine behind). Also, I do not supply baitcasting reels or fly fishing equipment to customers, so if you would like to use this type of equipment let me know in advance and plan to bring your own. What is your cancellation policy? If you must cancel a reserved date, please do so at least 10 days in advance. I will then apply your deposit to another available date within one year. If I must cancel a trip you may apply the deposit to the available date of your choice within one year or you may request a refund. What about bad weather? Occasionally severe weather or dangerous conditions may cause me cancel a trip. In such cases I will do my best to accommodate your schedule while setting up an alternate date. Are there any additional expenses? Yes, sometimes. Live bait and fish cleaning are not included in the price of the charter. Live bait is not always necessary but when it is, it is vital and is usually $25.00 per 100. Fish cleaning is optional and prices are: Redfish/Drum/Sheepshead 25” and under $1.00 each Speckled Trout/Flounder $ .25 each Tips/Gratuities? (I tried to hide it at the bottom!) This is a difficult question to answer for any guide. Here is what I tell my clients, and it applies to ANY charter you take: Tips are customary for guides, and of course are always appreciated. Your tip amount should be based on the following: Did the Captain work hard to find fish for you? Did he offer advice or help to make your catching more successful? Did you enjoy yourself? The important thing to remember is that "it's called fishing, not catching." A guide's job is to try to find fish for you, regardless of conditions, and to make your trip an enjoyable experience. Your tip should be based on how hard he has worked for you and the overall quality of the service and experience, not the number of fish caught. Consider this and make a tip in the amount you see fit.
